Ipswich Motorway Upgrade

Last week featured the joint state-federal government announcement of commencement of the Ipswich Motorway upgrade (widening) between Darra and Oxley.
The good news for us is cycling will be included in this upgraded 3km section. It will connect to existing previous cycling upgrades through the motorway works to the west, some of which will be used by a few thousand riders who choose the 110km route in the Great Brisbane Bike Ride on May 7.
BQ CEO Ben Wilson says this section is perhaps the most important as it connects larger population centres to workplaces and other bikeways, for work commuting particularly. It will provide a missing link in the western cycling corridor between existing facilities including the Centenary Bikeway.
BQ has been in meetings with the project team and is satisfied the project will deliver a much better outcome for cycling and will see thousands of extra cycle trips per week.
“Cycling will be a viable transport mode now for more people in these communities,” Mr Wilson said.
“The evidence is clear, existing cycle usage data of these new Ipswich Motorway corridor bikeways has clearly shown more cycling trips. We congratulate the Queensland government for its leadership and inclusivity of cycling with this project and the federal government for being a party in these improvements,” Mr Wilson said.
More information on Stage 1 is available on the Queensland Government website.
