BQ member takes on 3880km
Our members are an incredible bunch and every so often we hear about their amazing efforts. One such member is Julie Pesch who will cycle almost 4000km for charity before May next year.
This Wynnum resident will cycle the same distance that she will drive in the upcoming Sh*tbox Rally from May 19-25 between Brisbane and Darwin.
The rally is the biggest fundraiser for the Cancer Council, having raised more than $12M in eight years, and sees participants drive cars worth less than $1,000 across some of Australia’s worst roads from Brisbane to Darwin.
A three time participant, Julie decided to cycle the same distance as the rally to kickstart her fundraising efforts this year.
She intends to cycle to work in the city every day until she rides the 3,880km of the rally.
“I will plot my (virtual) progress along the rally route map as I go. The plan is to obtain tax-deductible sponsorship from individuals, businesses and community groups at $1 per kilometre.
“Anyone who sponsors me for a 100km block has the bonus of setting me an extra challenge to complete along the way,” she said.
“One friend has already nominated that I need to ride 100km in a Muppet animal costume”, she said. The costume is fitting attire for her rally entry which is named ‘Team Animal’.
“My connection with the rally comes via my younger sister, Heather, who was diagnosed with stage four breast cancer, and was initially given just two years to live.
“Thanks to the hard work others have put in before us, she has now made it to four years post-diagnosis.
“We are very grateful, and want to help others by raising as much as we can for the cause. In the three years I have been a part of the rally, we have managed to do this to the tune of $29,576,” she said.
If you can help, by becoming a team sponsor, Julie can be contacted via a message to Team Animal’s Facebook page facebook.com/Animal2018/
Fully tax-deductible donations are gratefully received, and can be made to Team Animal on animal.shitboxrally.com.au
