Bridge to a better travel future for Indooroopilly and surrounding suburbs
Bicycle Queensland has welcomed news this morning that Brisbane City Council is moving ahead on the Indooroopilly bikeway connecting the existing Western Freeway Bikeway at Indooroopilly to UQ at St Lucia.
The project will include a cycling and pedestrian bridge over the Brisbane River from Witton Road at Indooroopilly through Foxton Street near the Walter Taylor Bridge.
Bicycle Queensland CEO Anne Savage said the project was excellent news for healthy travel in Brisbane.
“This is bridge to a better travel future for the residents of Indooroopilly and surrounding suburbs – it will help address existing demand on the Walter Taylor Bridge by encouraging more people to cycle instead of drive,” Ms Savage said.
“Council’s investment in the Better Bikeways for Brisbane Program is delivering major benefits for the people of Brisbane.
“The new Indooroopilly bikeway will make travel by bike faster and safer, raising property values and bringing new business to the small business precinct along Riverview Terrace.
“The new shared bridge will rapidly mark its place on Brisbane’s iconic River Loop, enabling thousands of locals and visitors to enjoy all that Brisbane has to offer – on bikes.”
Detailed designs will be completed midway through this year, with construction expected to begin next financial year.
Consultation will begin this month, with an online survey and information sessions listed on Council’s website.
