BQ backs calls for new green bridges, not white infrastructure elephants
Bicycle Queensland has backed calls by Deputy Mayor Adrian Schrinner for the Neville Bonner Bridge to be scrapped, with the cost estimate for the walking-only bridge $40 million above the original estimate.
Bicycle Queensland CEO, Anne Savage, urged the State and local government to work together on a solution.
“The Neville Bonner Bridge is not the solution we need to get more people walking and riding in Brisbane.
“$120 million is a cost blowout of nearly 60 per cent, representing a poor investment of extremely value.
“If the Neville Bonner Bridge goes ahead, the people of Queensland will be poorer for it. We will be left with a white elephant for walking.
“There are a range of alternatives, including scrapping the bridge in favour of a Kangaroo Point Green Bridge, which could be delivered jointly by the State and local governments.
“We are urging the State to work with Council to come up with a better solution that achieves value for money to improve travel times for the greatest possible number of people.
“A Kangaroo Point Green Bridge, together with a range of other joint strategic initiatives, should be prioritised.”
