Showers won’t stop Queensland’s biggest celebration of cycling

October 13th, 2018

About 4000 riders are expected to turn out for Bicycle Queensland’s Brisbane to Gold Coast Cycle Challenge tomorrow, with 250 police, traffic controllers, route marshals, and volunteers working around the clock to ensure the event runs smoothly.

The Bureau of Meteorology is forecasting easing showers, with organisers watching the forecast closely.

Bicycle Queensland CEO Anne Savage said months of planning had gone into making the ride a success.

“Last year was one of the toughest, wettest rides in history – we’re well-prepared to ride in damp conditions on the proviso that authorities agree it is safe to go ahead,” Savage said.

“At this stage we expect conditions to improve and will be going ahead as planned.”

The ride is celebrating 14 years this year and is one of the state’s most popular cycling events.

“Every year we are one year older and wiser – with many of the same riders returning time and again for a fast and flat ride through some of South East Queensland’s most picturesque spots.”

Riders who haven’t registered can still register from 4am tomorrow at Southbank’s Wheel of Brisbane.

“We’re hoping to raise a record amount for five charity beneficiaries this year – being the Heart Foundation, Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia, Breast Cancer Network Australia, Smiling for Smiddy and beyondblue,” Savage said.

“People can make a donation at the start line and will also be supporting our mission to get Queensland cycling – through education, advocacy, information, and support services.

“We’re looking forward to a great ride with a protected route ready to go all the way to the Gold Coast, as well as a 60km short course from Logan.

“B2GC is the perfect opportunity for riders of all ages and ability to give cycling a go, with riders ranging in age from about seven to 70.

“We want to improve the health and wellbeing of all Queenslanders and encourage more people to get on their bikes for fun and fitness.

People who haven’t already entered can register from 4am tomorrow at Southbank’s Wheel of Brisbane and check out for more information on the event and after-party at Broadwater Parklands, Southport.
