BQ Meets: The Mountain Biker

When the pandemic-driven cycling boom reshaped Australia’s bike industry, many retailers diversified to meet surging demand across every category: road, commuter, mountain bike, gravel, kids and e-bikes. In Brisbane’s north-west, however, one new shop took a different path.

The Mountain Biker in Stafford opened its doors in the Covid era with a singular focus: mountain bikes. Within the BQ Office we do love an adventure on the dirt, and our member surveys suggest about half of you do as well.

In a market where most bike shops aim to be all things to all riders, The Mountain Biker has carved out a niche as a true specialist mountain bike retailer. From trail riders to enduro and down hill racers, e-MTB enthusiasts to cross-country competitors, the shop’s entire range is built around dirt, suspension, and getting riders onto the right bike for their terrain and ambitions.

That focus has allowed the team to curate one of the most impressive collections of high-end mountain bike brands under one roof in Brisbane. Riders walking into the Stafford showroom will find the latest models from Yeti, Norco, Mondraker, Cannondale, Amflow, Santa Cruz, Scott, Transition and Forbidden. This is an unusually broad range for a specialist store.

For owner Darren, the decision to specialise was both a passion project and a strategic move.

“When we set up, we were right in the middle of the bike boom,” Darren says. “A lot of people were discovering mountain biking for the first time, and we wanted to build a shop that really understood that space inside and out.”

By concentrating purely on mountain bikes, The Mountain Biker can stock deeper ranges of models, sizes and specifications, making it easier for riders to find the right bike for their needs. From lightweight XC rig like the Yeti ASR, to a long-travel enduro machine such as a Scott Voltage, or perhaps the Norco Sight VLT e-MTB for longer days on the trails.

That breadth has been particularly valuable in the fast-growing e-MTB market.

“We were honestly surprised at how quickly the e-bike side took off,” Darren says. “Having so many models in stock has been a huge benefit. People can actually see and ride different bikes, compare them, and leave with something that suits them straight away. That’s helped riders get out on the dirt faster, and it’s definitely led to a lot of word-of-mouth referrals. If you’d told me that the e-bike market would be so strong when we were setting up, I wouldn’t have believed you.”

Stocking such a range of bikes needs in-depth experience in the workshop, and the professional workshop sits at the heart of the operation, with experienced mechanics lead by Rowan Sedgman, is focused on keeping bikes running smoothly and reliably.

Beyond bikes, The Mountain Biker offers a comprehensive range of parts and accessories to help riders dial in their setups. From suspension components and drivetrain upgrades to tyres, protection, and riding gear, the shop is designed as a one-stop MTB destination.

“Our goal is simple,” Darren says. “We want bikes to spend more time on the trails and less time in the workshop. Whether it’s a routine service, a suspension tune, or a full rebuild, we’re here to keep people riding.”

The shop also caters to younger riders and families, with youth-focused mountain bike ranges from Norco and Scott helping introduce the next generation to off-road riding. With Brisbane’s north side offering easy access to trail networks, skills parks and regional riding destinations, The Mountain Biker has quickly become a hub for local mountain bikers.

In late 2025, The Mountain Biker joined Bicycle Queensland’s BQ Link retail partner program, aligning with a network of trusted bike shops that support BQ members with exclusive benefits and a shared commitment to getting more people riding safely.

True to its name, The Mountain Biker does exactly what it says on the tin. It’s a destination MTB shop for riders on Brisbane’s north side looking for a complete range of mountain bikes, knowledgeable staff, and a workshop that understands the demands of off-road riding.

Just don’t take your commuter there for service – unless you’re ready to be convinced that dirt is where the real fun begins.
